Steve, your 20 minute battle to get your shoes on will stay with me for many many years to come, but it was totally worth it, they looked absolutely mega mate!!! I’m sat here smiling whilst I remember your struggle! The struggle was real folks!Ģ. Directly below the chateau is a wonderful vegetable farm. At Les Eyzies, 10 minutes away, you will find the magnificent newly constructed National Museum of Prehistory, the cave paintings at Font de Gaume and the site of the Cro-Magnon man. and I only met these guys the day before, so I can only imagine how good the day must have been to their friends and family, some of whom had travelled from the other side of the globe! I’m sure those journeys and the collective airmiles were all worth it for the smell of the champagne alone, let alone the dancing, eating, fireworks and laughs that followed!!!!Ī few quick things to mention before I let you get stuck into the images…ġ. The Dordogne is one of the world centers of prehistory and it records Europe’s earliest art treasures. They left it late, based over in Sydney, I think they enquired with only a couple of months to go, but my gut feeling from the initial email that it was to be a good one, was spot on…. Amélie and Steve contributed enormously to the smile that I found myself taking back to Bordeaux airport on that hot Wednesday afternoon!! Their wedding at the stunning Chateau La Durantie in Lanouaille was nothing short of remarkable, but I knew from Steve and Amélie’s initial enquiry that I had to be at their wedding in the Dordogne. On reflection, it was one the craziest and most brilliant weeks of my career as a wedding photographer. This 12 C chateau has its own caves, non-guided walking tour and is a real find for history buffs. ![]() The grounds of each of these castles to stay in are beautifully manicured and vast – ideal for running around, adventure and exploring.*goes off to google ‘Humdinger’* – yep, that’s the word I need for this Chateau La Durantie wedding!!!Ī few weeks back was a first for me, it was the first time I flew to France for consecutive weddings, and naturally when you return from such a trip, people ask you ‘how was it’, and honestly, I’ve struggled to find the right words. Chateau Haut Smith Lafitte had Easter goodies for kids at their tasting boutique – complimentary chocolate eggs in cute packaging or family walks in the forest – Egg hunts for the children, grand cru tasting for parents. Wine tasting may not be on your kids agenda, but at Caudalie they had the most gorgeous grape juice – just like in my childhood: sweet, healthy and full of flavours. Occasionally the risotto proved too milky for their taste or the soup too smooth, but there was always something that they ate happily – from cod to smoked salmon, French steaks or simply gorgeous warm baguettes or fries and vegetables. Our kids like fine food as much as we do and loved being pampered with warm croissants, chocolat chaud and exquisite dishes. Fairy-tale and stories fire children imagination and our boys loved playing kings and queens of these superb mansions. Summary of the principal castles Le Chateau de Commarque, Les Eyzies Between Sarlat and Les Eyzies there is a fascinating castle: The Chateau de Commarque. And if you think superb chateaux hotels in France are not an obvious destination with kids, think again.
